Today, Bagamoyo is just a small town, but it was once one of the most important ports in East Africa. It was the main port for ivory and slave trade. The Bagamoyo area has many ancient buildings, some of which date back more than 800 years.
Today, Bagamoyo is known as the "Art Capital" of Tanzania. Every year from late September to early October, an art festival is held here. While there are more and more high-quality seaside resorts to choose from, its important to note that beach safety can sometimes be an issue.
